MENTAL HEALTH - DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
This segment of the Self-Reliance Focus is on mental health. In particular, how parents can assist their youth with issues of depression and anxiety. Below are some resources that might be helpful.

United Way of Utah County has the following resources for parents
The Emotional Resilience Manual: Chapter 4 Managing Stress and Anxiety– especially activity on pg. 62 and Chapter 5 Understanding Sadness and Drepression– especially the list of symptoms on page 82.
At the top of this page, click “Leader Resources” and it will take you to the “Welfare and “Self-Reliance Leader Resources” and under the “Counseling Resources” there is a section on “Mental Health.”
Dr. Matt Swensen who is a child psychologist, addresses this topic in this video.

Build Your Self-Reliance Plan
Individuals or families may use the Self-Reliance Plan form on their own or with the assistance of a mentor. The form helps assess needs, income, and expenses, identify available resources, identify service opportunities, and develop specific objectives to becoming more self-reliant.

Self-Reliance Initiative
Self-reliance is the “ability, commitment, and effort to provide the spiritual and temporal necessities of life for self and family. As members become self-reliant, they are also better able to serve and care for others.” Join a group sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in your area.

Many church and community organizations provide wonderful resources and services to meet the needs of individuals and families on their path to greater self-reliance. Click on the resource directory link below to begin to discover the available resources. Council with your mentor, minister or other church leader about how to potentially use these resources to find help and learn to become more fully self-reliant.

Stake-Sponsored Self-Reliance Groups
The Lehi West Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints now offers Self-Reliance groups. Groups are offered at various times throughout the year. Course curriculum is studied in a facilitated group setting once a week for 10 or 12-week cycles (depending on the group). The next round of courses will begin in early 2022. For this round each ward will hold their own classes for Personal Finance and Emotional Resilience for Adults/ Youth. When you register please indicate which ward you are in and your preferred day to attend the weekly class.
